Upside Down Christmas TreesOK, why in the world did people first display Upside Down Christmas Trees? The upside down Christmas Trees actually started in the Middle Ages in eastern Europe. Back when the Fir Tree was being used as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. The hanging trees were often decorated with color paper and lit with candles. In more recent times, retail stores used the upside down Christmas Trees to display decorations and people being people, some decided that this unique way of displaying a Christmas Tree was a good idea for the novelty factor. Now many major retailers sell upside down Christmas Trees that are already decked out with lights, ornaments, and other decorations. Some are designed with a tree stand and actually sit on the floor, others hang from the ceiling by chains or other device. Decorations hang just as well on the upside down versions as a normal Christmas Tree. Make Your Own: If you want to can make your own upside down model. Using a couple of anchor hooks in your ceiling with the proper weight designation (these trees can weigh up to 30 lbs). Or you can try and balance the tree in a stand, which is much more difficult. Decorating is the same, and really doesn't require any different methods. I would bet that it gets pretty tricky in trying to get the proper balance when adding the decorations though. Buying Pre-made Versions: Many Christmas Tree distributors have upside down Christmas Trees both with and without decorations. Most are artificial and especially designed to fit in a tree stand rather than hang from the ceiling. The models that come with lights and decorations can get pretty pricey, and most start above $350. Unique Advantages: Upside down Christmas Trees will give you a lot more room for presents. They also can keep decorations away from small children and animals who might want to play or even eat one to see what it tastes like. You also don't need to worry about a tree topping decoration or trying to climb up a ladder to position it properly. An upside down Christmas Tree is not for everyone. You certainly need to be ready for the comments and maybe a little heat for any true believers. That goes with the territory. I'm not to sure about making holes in my ceiling either. If I were to go with this type of display, I would definitely go for the tree stand version. That way you can change back next year is you find it's a little too different. Upside down Christmas Trees seem to be popular just for the novelty of the look and change from tradition. It's certainly a personal decision and can certainly add a new look for your Christmas celebrations. |
