Aluminum Christmas Trees

Aluminum Christmas Trees were first introduced in 1959 by a company in Wisconsin and were an immediate hit. Space age and modern looking, these trees whirled and had color lights that created a cascade of light.

The Aluminum Christmas Trees can be divided up into two categories. The vintage models from the first days of production and their modern counterparts. These vintage models have become collector's items and can go for a pretty high price. Some of the original models are almost 50 years old and many look just like the day they were built.

Aluminum Christmas Trees come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. The silver verision is the most popular but many were made in green, blue, gold, and red. Sizes range from small table top models of 18 inches all the way to 8 foot monsters. The numbers of branches varies too, some have as few as 24-30 and some may have over 200.

The preferred lighting method for these Aluminum Christmas Trees are color wheel devices. These units slowly rotate a wheel with different color plastic or glass panels to shine on the tree. Sometimes the color wheel is in plain site but often it is set off to a side and not visible. Then then manufacturers came up with a new twist (no pun intended) with rotating tree stands so that both the tree moved and the light changed..

Considerations: One of the reasons a color wheel is used to light the Aluminum Christmas Trees is that you can easy get shocked if normal lights are used since the tree conducts electricity. Never place anything with power on an aluminum tree for safety reasons. Many of the vintage models were made during a ten year period of 1959 to 1969. If you choose a vintage model with original rotating stand and floor light, make sure you double check that the system is safe and operating correctly. Only use ornaments and decorations that are non-electrical.

Decide On A Budget: Vintage models go for what the market will bear. That means the older and more rare models can go for $1000s of dollars. New models often start off at about $250 for a 4 foot tree with at least 55 branches. The 9 foot versions go up to $1000 with over 150 branches. Color wheels are around $65. The rotating stands are hard to find and pricey since they will probably be vintage models.

Durability: Properly handled and cared for, these trees will last longer than the owner. Obviously any moving parts or motors that run the floor stands or lights will need to be replaced from time to time. Tree parts need to be properly stored in a dry and out of any direct light container to keep the aluminum shiny.

Accessories: Other than the stand and light wheel device, most Aluminum Christmas Trees can function by themseves. Many owners do put ornaments on or other decorations but that would be necessary for any Christmas Tree.

Aluminum Christmas Trees can give you that retro look and create a unique decor. People either seem to love them or hate them but that's been the case since they first were made back in 1959.
